The Captain

Sinds september 2019 heeft The Captain zijn deuren geopend aan de Rouvilleweg 9e. Op wandelafstand van de Emmabrug (pontjesbrug), tegenover het pontje en met een fantastisch uitzicht op de St-Annabaai en de handelskade.

Op het uitnodigend, sfeervol terras waait er steeds een windje, de klanken van blues, soul, R&B en country klinken zachtjes op de achtergrond... je hebt de mogelijkheid om lekker aan de grote ruime bar te hangen of heb je zin in een potje kaart of zin in een spel backgammon? Ook dat kan bij The Captain!

Onder een goed gesprek kan je bij The Captain genieten van de Rum van Captain Morgan, een cognac of whiskey, een goed glas wijn, een biertje of een frisje.
Zin in een hapje? Vraag om de kaart of kijk op het bord..het assortiment is klein en divers maar smakelijk en huisgemaakt. Alles bereid met een “Touch of The Captain”.

De pontjesbrug

Vanaf The Captain heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de bekende pontjesbrug.

De Emmabrug of pontjesbrug is uniek omdat het de enige drijvende houten draaibrug ter wereld is. De brug is gebouwd op 16 drijvende pontons en wordt aangedreven door 2 grote scheepsmotoren. Toen de brug in 1988 klaar was voor gebruik werd er tol geheven: 2 cent voor voetgangers met schoenen, 10 cent voor de paarden en veel later 25 cent voor automobilisten. Door deze tolheffing gingen de wandelaars hun schoenen uitdoen en liepen blootsvoets over de brug... de tol werd opgeheven.

Je hebt vanaf de pontjesbrug een prachtig uitzicht op de Handelskade van Punda, het Brionplein van Otrabanda, het Riffort en fort Amsterdam.

Wanneer je de bel hoort, dan gaat de brug open en sluiten de hekken. De vlag gaat uit. Een oranje vlag betekend dat de brug maar korte termijn open zal gaan, een blauwe vlag voor langere tijd (tot wel 30min. of langer).

Bij de blauwe vlag gaan de GRATIS veerboten varen! Deze vertrekken en komen aan voor de deur van THE CAPTAIN.

Een betere service kunnen wij u niet geven, in enkele minuten van Otrabanda naar Punda!

September 2019 The Captain opened it’s doors on the Rouvilleweg 9e. The bar is on walking distance of the Queen Emma bridge (also known as the “Swinging Old Lady”) opposite the ferry. The bar has a fantastic view of the St-Anna Bay and the Handelskade.

There is always a breeze on the inviting, atmospheric terras. The sounds of blues, soul, R&B and country music plays softly on the background... Do you wanna play a game of cards or backgammon? It’s possible at The Captain!

You can enjoy the taste of Captain Morgan Rum, a cognac or whiskey, a good glass of wine, a beer or a softdrink while having a nice conversation.

Fancy a bite? Ask the menu or look at the board... the range is small and diverse but tasty and homemade. Everything prepared with a “Touch of The Captain”.

The Swinging Old Lady (Queen Emma Bridge)

From The Captains location is a great spot to view Curacao's unique Swinging Bridge.

Willemstad's Queen Emma bridge, affectionately known as the “Swinging Old Lady”, is one of the oldest and longest pontoon bridges in the world, connecting the Punda and Otrobanda districts of the island's capital. 16 floating pontoon boats support the bridge which at times swings open (using two powerful ship motors) allowing ships to access the port. When originally completed in 1888, tolls were charged for crossing the bridge: 2 cents for pedestrians wearing shoes, 10 cents for horses and, much later, 25 cents per automobile... but so many pedestrians just removed their shoes and crossed barefoot that the toll had to be ultimately scrapped. 

From the bridge you have a stunning view on the Handelskade from Punda, Brion Square in Otrabanda, Riffort en Fort Amsterdam.When you hear a bell ringing, the bridge opens and gates are closing, you will see the vlag. When the flag is orange the bridge is open for a short term, when he's blue it's for about 30min. or langer. Then you can take the ferry for FREE! They are leaving in front of THE CAPTAIN.
